RetroMichel | 108
Here is a thread in which we can express our passion for the magnificent Sega Saturn console by completing its NTSC-U/C library. This thread is based on Splain's wonderful work on his numerous threads in the Site-run Events & Contests forums. Huge thanks to him for his templates and already written rules, which I edited for the Sega Saturn library. Each game will be worth one point, so the points will be added up as "games completed" in the leaderboard. Feel free to comment as much as you'd like about the games you've completed (or not). Here are the rules: We're beating these games, starting now. All games must be started no earlier than the posting of this thread. (April 28th, 2022) There will be no "resets" at the end of the year; this is a focus on completing the entire library. Photos are not required but highly encouraged. Emulation is OK, but no cheat devices, cheat codes, looking up passwords, etc. Legitimate runs only. If you have questions about what constitutes "beating" a game, bring it up and we'll figure it out. (Typical requirements are to get an ending screen or credit roll, on the middle or default difficulty. Or beat the high score. Or win the tournament.) Some games are more obvious than others. Please respect these rules, but more importantly, have fun! Important: Every PAL or NTSC-J exclusive will count for one point, but will not count towards beating the entire NTSC-U/C game library. IF YOU NOTICE A TYPO OR A GAME LACKING, PLEASE WRITE BELOW. Thanks ! CodysGameRoom | 2,013
I might be down to contribute to this. I was just looking at my Saturn yesterday and thinking I should give it some playtime soon, and I've got almost a complete US library minus 30 or so games. I need to finish up my Pokemon Legends Arceus stuff but after that I'll check back here and try to dive in.
MagusSmurf | 579
I can probably do Clockwork Knight 2 and Magic Knight Rayearth sometime this year. Since I've beaten the NES game and consider it "rather bad but way overhated," then assuming I can get the emulation to cooperate I'll volunteer to suffer through Virtual Hydlide if this project gets close to completion and nobody else has done it. RetroMichel | 108
To start things off, I've completed the infamous Sonic R. This game is well-known for its poor controls and its soundtrack. I will be completely honest and admit that I actually had a lot of fun playing this colorful game. The soundtrack is stellar, composed by Richard Jacques with Teresa Jane Davis singing. TJ Davis has a wonderful voice and the songs are all "bops": they are very catchy and memorable. There are five race tracks in the game, which is the most disappointing feature about it. There are many hidden pathways, so they are quite complex maps, but still, five is nothing compared to games like Mario Kart 64, Crash Team Racing and Diddy Kong Racing on the rival consoles at the time. As for the controls, I did get used to it and it did not seem to bother too much my experience with the game. Only at the beginning, it was annoying to realize that I was always bumping into walls, but you just need to master the jumps and find the ideal pathways so that you can fly through the stages without any problem. I used Knuckles, who is a character that's considered one of the best in the game (if you do not consider some of the unlockable characters). Talking about the unlockable characters, four of them can be obtained by getting all the coins on the first four race tracks and then finish at least in third place. As for the fifth obtainable character, Super Sonic, you need to collect Chaos Emeralds in the four initial races and also finish first. This was harder, but then, Super Sonic is highly regarded as the best character in the game. People told me so many bad things about this game. As a French speaker living in Québec, I used to watch videos by a YouTuber named "Joueur du Grenier" (translates to "The Attic Gamer"), which is pretty much a French-speaking AVGN without all the curse words. He bashed Sonic R in a video about the first 3D games, then many people did so without playing the game. Pretty much the same situation that occurs when AVGN reviews a game, talks bad things about it, and then everybody dislikes it without having played it. As for my personal experience, I did have fun with it and it is such a joyful game, with bright colors and motivational music. I will definitely play it again for fun. It's not the best game on the system (far from it), but it's not as bad as people say. Edited May 1, 2022 by RetroMichel
RetroMichel | 108
Saturn Bomberman is completed. This game is such a must-have for any Sega Saturn owner. Even if the North American version can be very expensive, you can get the Japanese version for not too much and still be able to play it: Bomberman games can still be played without any major language barrier. Saturn Bomberman is widely recognized as one of the best games for the system and often, as the best Bomberman game ever. I do think it is a real candidate for such names, but I did also love the Bomberman games on the N64, which are very solid titles too. The soundtrack goes very well with the different themes presented in each level. My favorite world has to be the Wild West world, since it is in that world that you start to obtain the most interesting upgrades for your character and the music is simply the best there. At least, according to me. Also, the game has a great learning curve and becomes gradually harder, especially with the boss fights. The last few levels and bosses in Mr. Meanie's Future World can be a real challenge, so it was satisfying to complete the game today without too much trouble. If you have a Sega Saturn and a lot of money to spend, buy this game. If you have a Sega Saturn and not a lot of money right now to spend, buy this game's Japanese version.
LastCat | 246
Battle Monsters is now completed. (Kuuja Playthru) Quite the "Kusoge" fighter and generally bashed for being janky and what not however it's far from being the worst fighter out there.
LastCat | 246
Robo Pit is now complete. The Sega Saturn plays very differently from it's PSX counterpart. Weapon progression feels much more slower and the AI is very annoying following one singular pattern. On top of that the weapon's have very wonky collision detection, sometimes long range weapons clip thru your opponents. Stun locking is less apparent than the PSX version. Other differences are the "Boss" robots. On the Saturn version there's 3 while on the PSX there's "Special Robots", most if not all weapons on the SAT version are considered normal while the other version treats some of them as "special". There's a lot of differences to list but that's for another time.
LastCat | 246
Battle Arena Toshinden / Toushinden S is now complete. (Ellis Story Mode Run, 1CC No loss) Despite how people critique the game's floaty jumps it has it's charms plus the Saturn version has welcoming features like the addition of two characters and a story mode as well which the original PSX version lacked.
LastCat | 246
Dark Legend is now complete. (Lu Zhi Shen run) Great game overall and an awesome soundtrack as well although it feels less fast paced than it's pesudo sequel Suiko Enbu Fuuunsaiki.

Red | 449
I beat the high scores in all the tables of Hyper 3-D Pinball, so consider it done. Not on the same level as Necronomicon and Last Gladiators, but pretty good overall.

Andykin Skysk8r | 54
Lunacy is done. Every game like this that has come before it was extremely clunky. Lunacy is the first one that was truly enjoyable. Released in 1996 but with a graphics update would fit right in as a modern game. Great game. Btw, if you get stuck at a bullshit roadblock, the manual has a list of the bullshit roadblocks and helps you out with them. I got stuck for hours because I didnt think to *spoilers* - put the book back on the bookshelf, because why tf would you make me do that? I saw the Louisa plot twist coming a mile away, still cool though. Instead of Fred turning into a beam of light or whatever that was they should have just made him fully remember a bunch of combat skills to have an epic showdown. Since I had no idea that you have to get secret items to save the 4 people in the city of moons, the only one I saved was Mac, the watchsmith. I found the secret item to save Morse, but he had already died by the time I got it. No idea what I needed to save Hannah, Rose and the kid. Presumably I had to jump around a bunch of other teleporting paintings. I mainly searched the X O Clock towers for these but I probably should have searched the elemental towers too. Oh well, the game was seriously fun so I might just play through it again to try to save Hannah, she was always cool. Morse was an ass, dont even care he died though I might save him too. Edit: Played through the whole game again and saved everyone. Edited June 2 by Andykin Skysk8r
Andykin Skysk8r | 54
For Rise 2 there are 24 difficulty settings, default is level 12. I have beaten the game on levels 9 and 10. I will try 11 and 12, but in case I fail just know that this is an easy game you can beat in an hour or two, its just a matter of cheesing the AI. Its basically a dumbed down Mortal Kombat but with 20ish characters.
Andykin Skysk8r | 54
On Rise 2 I beat difficulty 11 easily, then went on to 12. I won all the matches until there was only 5 or so left. I played as Griller and lost my first continue to Suppressor, switched to Lockjaw and somehow got destroyed by one of those small ninja guys who are usually easy. So for my final continue I switched back to Griller. The game does a thing where when you pick your character its loading but it gives you no indication its loading for like 10 seconds. So naturally you start pushing buttons trying to select your character thinking you pushed the wrong button, and this soft reset the game and erased my progress. So I now hate this game and will never play it again. For anyone who wants to beat it though just use Griller and Lockjaw and use the poke strategy that works in most fighting games. Also most of the guys have the same dumb ai which does a forward jump kick if you walk towards it without attacking. You can abuse this and punish them repeatedly. Andykin Skysk8r | 54
I got stuck in a long phone call that I had to sit through so I fired up Rise 2 and played it in the background on difficulty 12. I went undefeated until 2-3 guys left and went up against Anil8 who I usually crush, but this time he beat me with Griller, I switched to Lockjaw and he beat me again. The only time Ive ever lost with both guys to a single enemy. I switched back to Griller, tightened my focus and took him out. Then not long after was the last boss. I took round 1, she took round 2, and I pulled out a clutch round 3. So Rise 2 is done. Funny that the run where I beat it is the only real run an enemy got the better of me. Glad to be done with this one, a cheap MK clone milled out by Acclaim is unworthy of such a fine beast like the Saturn.
Andykin Skysk8r | 54
I've been playing 1945, its a pretty good game but you have to really turn down the difficulty to make it not brutal. I had to set it to "child" before I could beat the game, and I could still only do it using the best plane. I bumped it up to "very easy" and spent a few hours trying to beat it. Got to the last boss but just got tired of needing to do every step of the whole level perfectly just so I could say I beat very easy mode. Part of me likes this game but I'm not really enjoying it anymore.
Astro Bot | 93
Three Dirty Dwarves. I've beaten this years ago, and just decided to play it again for this thread. It's one of the most unique beat 'em ups I've ever played with the three character system. There are some nice surprises as you go from stage to stage with some 2.5D elements, some interesting boss fights/enemies, some light platforming/puzzle solving, and some unusual scenarios. The art style is really nice and the game has nice, cartoonish animation. There were a bunch of games adopting a look straight out of a cartoon in the 90s like Aladdin on the Genesis, Comix Zone, The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the SNES, and various Disney games. Three Dirty Dwarves is similar. The story is definitely odd, but in a good way and the FMVs make you feel like you're watching a cartoon. This is a really great example of the kind of wacky games you would get back in the 90s, like the Earthworm Jim games for example. Similar to that game, Three Dirty Dwarves has weird and silly enemies and a willingness to try any unusual thing to surprise the player. The soundtrack is great too:
