Estil | 1,292
Okay so we all know how sometimes different artists will do remakes/cover versions of songs right? Well for this topic we'll spotlight remakes/cover versions of major hits that are WAY better than the original (the ground rule being that the original song must've been a major hit). I'll give you a few to get started: Now this one is gonna be a controversial one but I honestly do like Whitney's power ballad take: C'mon, who better to sing Along Came Jones than...well, Jones? Gloves | 12,269 Administrator ·
The Gerard Way cover of Happy Together improves on the original without really changing it in any drastic way, mostly just bumping it up a notch: Apparently it was made for a Netflix show I've not seen, but it's my favorite version now of one of my favorite songs.

fox | 1,771
Somehow this one feels even more 80s than the 80s version
Aguy | 784
Awesome soundtrack and Tamia's cover of Wham's Careless Whispers (great song to begin with) is the best track on the album.
Tabonga | 2,533
These two don't really eclipse the originals - just put a much differents spin on them: The originals: And these covers (there were plenty of them - not just these): The Reba cover is particularly interesting since the men in the bar were mostly actors from some of the older tv westerns.

Tabonga | 2,533
Here's another one - while I like the original better the cover was certainly more popular/influential. (From 1968) (From 1970)

nesmaster14 | 464
Fun thread! I'm not a huge Nirvana fan, but their take on Man Who Sold The World would probably qualify: How about some Streets of Rage: (original) Edited September 15, 2022 by nesmaster14
Reed Rothchild | 9,952 Editorials Team ·
Here's one that's most metal elitists would probably find rather blasphemous It blows the doors off the MF version. Come at me.

Tabonga | 2,533
This is an odd story about covers - which were surprisingly common in the fifties and early sixties. "The Man in the Raincoat" was originally released by Priscilla Wright in 1955 - somewhat unusual in that she was just 14 at the time. There were four covers released in 1955 - at least one of which charted as well as the original. (This was an era when releases were mostly on 45s since LPs were just hitting the market.) Estil | 1,292
Not exactly the usual ground rules as these are classic 19th century American folk songs but I gotta bend the rules a bit and include them... As for our state anthem (and I think UK is the only college basketball team that has a distinctive closing/"flag lowering"/after game song) nobody did it better than Happy... LeatherRebel5150 | 1,096
I don’t know how many of these were hits originally, though Im sure Sympathy for the Devil was, I just think GNR does every cover song better then the original. Metallica is close second with that Edited September 16, 2022 by LeatherRebel5150

I think they released Hurt right after Closer (the monster hit from that album). And my contribution to the discussion: The fact that most Abba songs work great as metal covers is a testament to how much musical talent Benny and Bjorn have.

Estil | 1,292
A few more somewhat controversial picks; I wouldn't say they blow away the originals but I happen to like these even better...
