Decoupling the NES from the Famicom

I would. I mean, can't really take part in the other competitions when I don't have the NES games. Stuff like Mad City is the classic example of why .

I don't own a single physical NES game, but still participate thanks to emulation. Sure, it's not the real thing, but close enough.

Certain changes to the difficulty are really maddening however. Mad City is one of those games that got a lot harder, but also Elnard -> 7th Saga on the SNES or Bare Knuckles -> Streets of Rage 3 on the Genesis/Mega Drive. I'm sure there's plenty more games that could be mentioned, but the latter two really stood out to me.

@Gloves There's like 665 60-Pin Famicom exclusives.

So if the NES 712 is doable, then so is Famicom.

I was being hyperbolic to make a joke/example of how there are a legit large number of games in that region which are just not the types of games that people enjoy(ed) in the west. It's not across the board of course, I'd have loved to have seen more RPGs get brought over here, but obviously those are a lot of work to translate.

That said, the bulk of this forum is North American. Most don't speak or read Japanese so text-heavy games are basically out of the question, ignoring English fan translations. Then there's the Mahjong and similar titles - do people want to play those games? People suffer through the painful games on the North American library to hit those numbers and get it done, but with lesser familiarity of the mechanics and systems of the more Japanese-centric titles, much of the library won't be touched due to lack of nostalgia.

A lot of NA region games get love because it's what we had access to as kids. Similar to how I've never played Doom or Quake, but I really loved Chasm: The Rift - I had access to the freeware version of that game. I really loved Dino Riki and Zombie Nation which I had growing up but didn't play Gradius until I was an adult. Similar stories exist for all of us here I'm sure where we played whatever was eye-catching at the flea market that month.

Could a Famicom completion thread exist? Of course, please, anyone who wants to make that thread and manage it - go for it; I'll even help, I have a few games and have played and would play many more. Will it ever get completed? No. Does that make it not worth trying? No! Again - go for it, I love those threads.

The rules to Mahjong are subjective. Some people think it’s played one way, others think it’s played another way 🤪

Well yeah, you touch the tile, drag it next to another on your screen and they disappear into the ether.  Right? 😛

Seriously though I know it's complicated, a bunch of math for values and sets.  I have one of the earliest on a FC cart I found locally for a couple bucks, can't figure it out but I think it would be fun.

@Tulpa I get that was snark, but actually, yeah I have played most the US titles at least for 30-60min window or more, kind of had to in part in the later 90s with all those rom releases, having to make those header for a file and ensure the game worked wasn't just slapping a few bits on top and praying to golden buddha mario.

@ThePhleo From what I can recall skimming that list, I think you're on the nose pretty much give or take what someone as you said may feel qualifies.  There are also oddball overlap titles that saw more than a singular release like their punchout gold and not gold, zelda1 fds convert late game vs the disk, other strangeness, competition carts, give away prizes etc.  Also perhaps some are debatable like that Famista cart which ended up with Namco to Atari, Atari as Tengen for RBI Baseball.

Also... @fcgamer holdin out on me are ya?  Mega duck now that's interesting.

Sometimes I can be assertive but I’m generally always arguing the ideas, not the  persons. I hope nobody took anything I posted as personal.

Sometimes you gotta stir the pot and get people amped up before people will actually start to speak their mind and contribute to the conversation. In the end my only motivation is to get people the add their thoughts and viewpoints into the discussion whether I agree or disagree

To clarify - I don't believe you've said anything in this thread that was particularly negative or telling other people they are wrong for having an opinion.  You shared opinions and perspectives and challenged things, but I don't recall any scenario where it felt like you were putting people down for their ideas or being negative.

In fact, my message wasn't meant as a "oh admin stepping in to fuss at people" - it was just.... spacepup the user sharing his thoughts on this issue and similar issues.  No-one has been particularly *toxic* in this thread.  I just saw a few comments about right and wrong, and this console sucking and that console sucking, so I shared my thoughts on that.

There are probably some errors, but this is a pretty solid start I think.

Also, my list includes some weird stuff....

Best Play Pro Yakyuu Shin Data, Gradius Archimendes Edition, Safety Rally, Star Soldier Time Trial Special, Kiddy Sun in Fantasia....I'm not entirely sure if they belong or not.

I get that was snark,

Actually not snark, just pointing out the disconnect of castigating a set of games without having played them, which is a core (if not THE core) of his argument. Kind of blows a gaping hole in his credibility.

This thread is interesting.  Question here - has anyone ever hooked a Famicom Disk System up to a NES?  Is it possible to do so?  I'm not trying to imply anything by the question, I'm just interested if such a thing has ever been done.

The FDS hooks to the Famicom via a RAM adapter, which is a 60 pin interface.

If you had enough 72-60 pin and 60-72 pin adapters in the right combo, or one big one, you could get the RAM adapter to interface with a frontloader.

I have not done it, but it is possible to do. There are two parts to the disk system. One is the disk drive which is the big red box that is usually placed underneath the Famicom. Then there is the cart slot connector. That is the black assembly that plugs into the cartridge slot of the Famicom. It gets wired up to the disk drive.

The problem with using it on NES is that the cart slot connectors shape is such that you can’t fit it into the NES using traditional 60-72 pin adaptors. However, You could probably rig something up using a game genie and an extra long adapter to be able to use the cart slot connector for FDS

Personally, I would be really interested in a Famicom completion thread as I have plenty of games lying around here and know some Japanese, too. However, I have zero experience in organizing something like that and am under the impression that there are plenty of other people here who already have a vast knowledge of the Famicom and Famicom-adjacent library. Maybe I could still help with grunt work.

So, it looks like it requires a simple (depending on what is inside that thing) adapter to get FDS working on a NES.  That would be another small point toward similarity.

Also, all FDS games are Famicom games (as are MegaCD games MegaDrive games), but clearly not all Famicom games are FDS games.

I can understand seeing FDS as a separate platform, because games are made specifically to be used with it - to run it, not just as a peripheral, so I'm cool with that. But for most purposes trying to separate them from the rest of the NES/FC library, doesn't really do much good, so it makes sense to see it as a subset.

I've almost exclusively been using my FDS drive with my US top loader, it's not really that crazy. But I can see it being bothersome with a front loader. 🙂

EDIT: I guess that was really a response to @wongojack - yes, there is really no issue hooking up an FDS up to an NES - but if you want expansion audio you of course need to fix that for your NES as well. Works the same as with carts.

ALSO how is lasagna a PITA meal? You literally just make a meat + pasta casserole in layers, casserole being among the easiest, most chill meals to make. Chuck that bad boi in the oven and it's good after X time; skabetti you have to monitor to make sure it's the right doneness else it'll be all mushy and gross.

You have obviously never made a lasagne before and it shows.  There are hours of prep even before it gets baked.  It's also extremely expensive.  Lasagne is a meal that basically takes all day to make.  It's not just noodles and sauce with cheese.

I'm curious how you make lasagna now... New thread, maybe? 😅

I usually spend like 20 minutes preparing the two sauces, and then pile it all up and give it ~30 minutes in the oven. Nothing special about how I do it either, it's a super traditional lasagna, and very delicious. You can make them quite cheap too, but I'm not sure what your standards for that is - really depends on what you compare it to.

As for spaghetti, @Gloves let me tell you a cool trick I use every time so I don't have to monitor it as it boils - a timer 😉

Lemme make sure I'm clear: I was exaggerating for funsies, on account of how ridiculously hyperbolic the arguments can be. Once we start talking noodles aren't lasagna, we've jumped the shark in terms of the conversation at hand, so I'm gonna have fun with it.

I've made plenty of lasagnas before and am familiar with the effort involved.

I imagine he's adding multiple different cheeses, hand-rolling the pasta, raising his own livestock...

It's an all day affair, man.
