Sumez | 3,153
Some of my favourites have already been posted, namely SFC Final Fantasy 6, Double Dragon 2, and Famicom Guardic Legend. I absolutely love the artwork on the SNES Prince of Persia, but it's only framed correctly on the Japanese release, which looks gorgeous. Hagane looks so good I wish I could afford owning the box too: Probotector 2 looks amazing too, makes me willing to forgive the "censorship" they did on Super Contra. The Ico box art of course is a classic: The Japanese are pretty amazing at making new covers even for western titles, too. I gues Prince of Persia almost fits into that category also. Totally forgot about Hagane. Now that is a work of art.

A lot of the time, all a kid had to go off of for what games to rent or buy were the cover art, and the blurb at the back of the box, so it's surprising to me how much bad cover art is out there honestly. It's a good thing we still have examples of good cover art nowadays, since it's far less important now than it was back then. Speaking of good modern cover art actually, here's another one I forgot to mention: Actually, we often didn’t even have the blurb on the back of the box. Back then games were often sold in a video game section of big department stores, locked inside of a glass case (kinda like Walmart still does today). Your parents would let you look at games while they shopped and then come back and tell you to pick a game. You typically didn’t get to even hold the box until after the cashier rang it up and it was paid for. Then you would read the blurb on the back of the box in the car on the way home Edited August 4, 2020 by phart010
Sumez | 3,153
I definitely checked the back of the boxes back then, but only to look at screenshots. Generally what sold a game to me was a cartoony look, hell if it were based of a fun cartoon license that was only a bonus (somehow I got lucky with those, and never burned by the cash grabs). The car on the way back home is for perusing the manual
croagunk | 798
Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak for Game Boy Advance. The art style is so cute. Great cover art for a great game. If only it could have been on the cartridge as well.

Webhead123 | 745
I have a real soft spot for a lot of Atari game box art. So much so that I have several posters of it on the walls of my game room. Stuff like Berzerk, Yar's Revenge, Slot Racers, Asteroids, etc. Another game box I've always had a soft spot for though is: Super Mario Kart
a_profile_name | 230
A PC game for a change. Never played it, but as a kid I always wanted to just because of the box art, even before I saw gameplay footage. Also, I'd like to adopt the cat. DoctorEncore | 3,691
Nothing immediately sprung to mind, although I have a soft spot for the art that adorns many NES boxes. That being said, after perusing this thread, my vote goes to the original Doom. I do not think there is a more iconic piece of videogame art out there. Razzie.P | 6
I haven't played it yet, but I got this for Christmas last year and my first thought was "this could be the best cover I've ever seen on a video game" Looking at it now, I dunno. But I do guess I need to make it a point to play it soon 1
Renmauzo | 1,206
Anything in the Koei Simulation series: Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Nogunaga's Ambition, Aerobiz, Uncharted Waters, Genghis Khan, Inindo, Gemfire...the list goes on. These games have some of the most beautiful and lifelike artwork on any box for any console from any period.
CMR | 538
I always liked the art for the first Uncharted Waters. That chick looks like she is so over it.
