Google loses antitrust trial in major blow to tech giant

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/google-loses-antitrust-trial-in-major-blow-to-tech-giant-191745614.html

The ruling, made by the District of Columbia's Judge Amit Mehta, sided with the US Justice Department and a group of states in a set of cases alleging the tech giant abused its dominance in online search.

Judge Mehta ruled that Google violated antitrust law in the markets for "general search" and "general search text" ads, which are the ads that appear at the top of the search results page.

Coupled with Google's YouTube ads and Google network revenue, both of which it promotes on its general search engine, advertising accounted for a staggering $237 billion of the company's $307 billion in total revenue.

The cases were handled together because of their nearly identical allegations that said Google held on to its monopoly by paying companies like Apple, Amazon, Mozilla, and Firefox to make Google the default search provider on mobile phones, tablets, and browsers.

Microsoft's Bing accounts for just 3.74% of the global market across all platforms, while Yahoo Finance's affiliate company Yahoo accounts for 1.16%. In the US, Google controls 87% of the search market on all platforms. Bing has 7.2%, Yahoo has 2.4%, and DuckDuckGo has 1.9%. On mobile, Google captures 95% of the US search market.

Glad they lost! They're too big for their own britches, much like Apple. Oh, and DuckDuckGo is definitely the best search engine!

I was thinking it'd be buttigieg but I also know fuck all about any of these people.

I was thinking it would be Mark Kelly -- served in the navy, was a genuine astronaut, governor if a swing state. Not sure what's not to like, but I think Walz will be fine. I mean, it's not much of a choice anyway --

I was rooting for Buttigieg (I was really impressed by him in 2020) but I’ve got to say I’m impressed with the Tim Walz pick.  Browsing his wiki is really impressive.  He had me at high school teacher ❤️ .  I also recall seeing a lot of those bills he signed in the news.  But then this:

I absolutely love it.   Man is what the GOP pretends to be.  So one thing that actually stands out for me on a personal level is the high school football coach thing.  Watching him speak, it’s giving me flashbacks.  I had those coaches.  Like a better version of men I knew.  I respected those men.

Buttigieg is probably the smartest option, but unfortunately middle America is not quite ready for a friend of Dorothy's to be that high up. Hopefully in the near future, because that guy is awesome.

Shapiro had too much baggage. Kelly is needed in the Senate.

Walz is definitely the best pick for the circumstances.

Hell of a speech! I think he's going to be great. The real issue is to get the swing states inline and make sure they vote Democrat. I mean, whether you're "liberal" or "conservative" you have two choices here:

1)Vote for the crazy Putin-loving lunatic who wants to be a permanent dictator.

2)Vote for democracy.

lol did they really boo the Springsteen in NJ line?

Great speech.

He reminds me of many politicians that I've found exciting in the past (most of all Dan Biss, IL governor candidate) and they didn't win but I have high hopes here for a win and for effective actions and policy and changes thereafter for the country.

Now, if only we can stop warmongering. I don't expect the "Genocide Joe" foreign affairs to end with Harris in charge but it's hilariously hypocritical when I see republican voters level that charge.

in all seriousness, they were saying "Bruuuuuuuce". His fans do it all at his gigs.

There's something similar on the podcast "How did this get made". Where I was under the impression that the audience always booed the hosts at the start of every show, (I thought made it was some inside joke that I had missed the origin of), but actually they were chanting their names "Juuuuuuune" and "Zoooooooks"

Is a Disney Theme Park Vacation Still Worth the Price?

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/09/travel/disney-vacation-cost.html

The data they’ve collected in recent years shows that the cost of a Disney World trip, on average, has gone up almost 25% since 2019. Seventy percent of that increase is for services that used to be free.

A one-day ticket to either of Disney’s U.S. parks now costs $109 for anyone over the age of 10.

That's insane. So, if I were to take the fam there for just two days of parks, that would be over $1000, not including hotel, transportation, and food.

In an email, a spokesperson for Disney said the company is always trying to offer guests an array of tickets and experiences. To the company, and its most loyal fans, she said, the value of the experiences is worth the price.

If I was young I might say "LOL" but being an old curmudgeon I'm going to say this sounds like shite.

“We’ve been in business for 13 years and we’ve heard complaints about cost for 13 years,” Antonelle said. “It’s nothing new.”

Yeah, but there's a new recession looming. Oh, and apparently attendance is down 15% since 2023 🐭

I've got bad news for you guys: the majority of your country's citizens aren't as rabidly woke as the mainstream legacy media would have you believe.  If the much better Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton couldn't defeat MAGA with far better "polling" going in, what on earth makes you think that Kamala is somehow going to fair better this time around?  And furthermore, I don't think a vp candidate who puts tampons in high school boy's washrooms is as "high school coach" down to earth as you have somehow come to believe.

As someone from the outside looking in, I feel like every single blue vote in November across the country will be decidely a vote against Trump rather than an actual vote for Kamala.  Seriously, do you even care about what's happened to your country in the last four years or does this whole "anyone but Trump" mantra have you completely blinded to the core?!?  If he was going to make himself a "permanent dictator," why didn't he do that already when he was in power?  Why risk the chance of not getting elected to a second term?  Also, how many more millions of illegal immigrants can your country's southern states take???  Just getting started here, but the summation of all my feelings on this is that you guys voting blue in November are bat-shit fucking C-R-A-Z-Y!

Disney wants wrongful death suit thrown out because widower bought an Epcot ticket and had Disney+

https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/14/business/disney-plus-wrongful-death-lawsuit/index.html

Court documents show that the company is trying to get the $50,000 lawsuit tossed because the plaintiff, Jeffrey Piccolo, signed up for a one-month trial of the streaming service Disney+ in 2019, which requires trial users to arbitrate all disputes with the company. Company lawyers also claim that because Piccolo used the Walt Disney Parks’ website to buy Epcot Center tickets, Disney is shielded from a lawsuit from the estate of Piccolo’s deceased wife, Kanokporn Tangsuan, who died of a reaction to severe food allergies.

In a legal filing responding to Disney’s claims, Piccolo’s lawyer Brian Denney called Disney’s argument “preposterous” and said that the notion that signing up for a Disney+ free trial would bar a customer’s right to a jury trial “with any Disney affiliate or subsidiary, is so outrageously unreasonable and unfair as to shock the judicial conscience.”

Walt Disney Parks and Resort is “explicitly seeking to bar its 150 million Disney+ subscribers from ever prosecuting a wrongful death case against it in front of a jury even if the case facts have nothing to with Disney+,” Denney wrote in court papers as a response.

Piccolo is seeking damages in excess of $50,000 pursuant to Florida’s Wrongful Death Act, as well as damages for mental pain and suffering, loss of companionship and protection, loss of income and medical and funeral expenses.

Wow, if that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about how Disney operates these days! They see you as nothing more than a money bag to be exploited. I can't imagine the shock and horror to have your loved one day from an allergic reaction when you're on vacation. Then, this huge multi-billion dollar company says "well, you did subscribe to our streaming service 5 years ago, and there's a clause there that says we own your souls for eternity, so yup" -- DISNEY IS A PIECE OF SHITE!! Fuck them. They don't deserve our patronage. They're not better than any large corporation you already hate.

Alright, you spewed a lot of bullshit that I'm not even going to entertain, but I find this interesting. Do you really believe Donald Trump is the same candidate he was in 2016? It's a bit hard to present yourself as a political outsider when you've already served a term as President, no?

Also, I would argue nationwide polling doesn't mean much. The Harris/Walz ticket will win the popular vote by several million. A Republican presidential nominee hasn't won that shit in my lifetime lol. What matters are where those votes come from, and Harris is ahead of where Clinton was at the end of her campaign in many key swing states (for now).

Trump still has a very real chance to win because of how tight the margins are in many of these states. His path, like always, is to pray that he can ride his electoral advantage to the Presidency, despite being the less popular candidate. As a random on the internet with no polling background, it looks like that path is still there, although I would argue it's shrinking.

Trump has never won the popular vote in any of his elections, and he certainly hasn't gained popularity despite what right winger substacks might say.

Yeah, I can tell you're not an American with this one lol. I don't expect you to be informed on our news, our institutions, and the positions of our political parties. If you were, I reckon you'd be among a very small minority.

Coincidentally, many of our own citizens aren't even informed on daily happenings in Washington or even fundamental details of government structure. Less than half of Americans can name the three branches of the federal government. Less than a quarter of Americans are aware that the First Amendment guarantees freedom of religion.

I also don't think it's a huge surprise that Trump has a huge lead among disengaged voters, who largely do not follow political news, according to an April NBC News poll. Maybe you can argue that the news media is corrupting minds, meaning that uninformed voters are actually the ones who are "right." To that, I have no argument. Believe what you want to believe. But I'm sure you at least find it a little concerning that people who couldn't name more than two decisions from the last Supreme Court session are also deciding on who is most qualified to nominate those Supreme Court justices.

Isn't it great how so many of the arguments for another Trump administration rely on an elementary understanding of subject matter? It's like some Brexit shit, again.

Now I don't expect you to respond to this, but is it perhaps possible that the President & his cabinet are not responsible for record high inflation? Could there have been another contributing factor that led to increased manufacturing and transportation costs? Maybe a decrease in supply of the world's largest energy source? Is it possible that one of the largest producers of that energy source is currently at war? Is it also possible that they are at war with, surprise!, another major energy producer? I wonder if this has anything to do with inflation? Surely not...

Anecdotally, whenever I'm around Republican family I am constantly subjected to bad takes about how "Bidenomics" have created this whole inflation thing, and if Trump was in office, none of these prices would have gone up. If I ever poke and prod, I usually get some grumbles about "deficit spending" and "national debt" or whatnot. Interesting to note that Trump increased the debt by more than half of what Biden did. He actually accumulated more debt in three years of office than Biden is on track to accumulate in a full term. If you want to go there, we can go there. I personally don't like this way of thinking though. It's my belief that the effect of presidential and even legislative policies on the economy are very much overstated.

It's also funny to pretend that Biden controls prices in other countries 🤣 We'll use the EU is as a comparison to the US in terms of output and quality of life. How is it that the EU both had higher peak inflation and took longer to come down from that peak? Is that Biden's doing? Again, I don't subscribe to the belief that the entire economy is A) controlled by the President and B) responds instantaneously to any of the President's actions, but if I did, I'd be inclined to give Biden his flowers here.

Actually, @JamesRobot, maybe it's easier to just get the opinion of someone who lives outside America. What does someone like @Sumez think about all that damn inflation Biden's caused in Denmark?
