tordur | 28
Seems that Gimmick! will get a release for the exA-Arcadia arcade system. https://exa.ac/product/gimmick-exact-mix/?v=0f177369a3b7 Quote SUNSOFT’s master class in action platforming returns exclusively to the arcade with Gimmick! exAct☆Mix! With full compatibility with modern 16:9 LCD displays and legacy 4:3 CRT monitors, Gimmick! brings excitement and engagement to players, and big income to your arcade. Gimmick! exAct☆Mix delivers smooth and detailed new graphics, an arranged soundtrack, and emphasized scoring mechanics to the NES/Famicom cult classic. A new Time Attack mode has been added, allowing for both new players to practice later stages, and for experienced players to compete for the best completion time. Stages may also be played in an alternate order with the Stage Edit function, keeping players of all skill levels coming back for more. Includes A1 poster, instruction sheet and instruction strip (Japanese and English). Orders will be shipped out in the order received pending available inventory. Price for the system is SGD$ 3,549 (~USD2,600) Price the the game is SGD$1,699 (~USD1,245) Game + system bought as bundle: SGD$4.529 (~USD3,320) Wasn't familiar with the system, but it's interesting indeed. Wouldn't expect someone going all in on a new arcade system in 2020 - Going to be interesting to see, how far they can take it. Their list of partners already at this point is fairly impressive: https://exa.ac/en/partners/?v=0f177369a3b7 Thoughts? Sumez | 3,171
I feel like I've already exhausted all I can say about exA across a ton of ongoing debates, but in summary let's just say there are a lot of issues with it and the people running it. Regarding the Gimmick remake though, Mike Moffitt who is making it is an awesome guy. I trust him more than most other people that could possibly undertake the project, and it looks like it really will be the ultimate version of this game. It's really too bad all exA releases have an exclusivity deal, so if a home port ever shows up it will either be in an altered form or way into the future. tordur | 28
This does seem to be old news, after I've Googled the subject a bit more. Was surprised it hadn't been discussed on here before. @SumezDo you know of any venue in our part of the world that has an exA setup?
avatar! | 1,948
Damn it all... I just want an official reproduction on a famicom cart (or NES as long as it has the music chip)! Is that too much to ask...??

No one in Denmark for sure. Only one in Scandinavia I'm aware of is Sugoi in Helsinki, but I know a tiny handful of Swedish private collectors have invested, so some of those may be accessible. Usually people have been getting it for Aka To Blue. (which btw has received a lot of criticism for input lag, but that's inherent to the engine it uses, not the PC hardware. Gimmick has been confirmed to have minimal lag) Edited September 3, 2020 by Sumez

cartman | 195
I like the idea of arcades and i wish they were around but i just don't have that kind of money for a single game. Atleast not one that was produced in this modern age.
a3quit4s | 4,398
The only place in the USA I’ve seen arcade games these days is at Dave and Busters and they are not the stand up joystick ones from the 80’s.

koifish | 601
Had no idea this was a product. Somehow it is fitting that one of the most sought-after and expensive FC games is now getting a "remaster" for an even more expensive arcade unit. On the other hand, you can probably sell your gimmick cart as a down payment toward the arcade unit
Sumez | 3,171
Had the rare opportunity to play this remake last weekend. It's by far the best version of Gimmick the world will likely see. Except from the final boss which is one of the more iconic NES sprites IMO, and got a completely inexplicable redesign for the remake (instead of a badass black clad knight with a light saber, it's now a magical girl waifu with a magic wand), the new graphics fit the game absolutely perfectly. It looks fantastic, and is even perfectly compatible with a 4:3 CRT monitor. Mechanically it plays completely like the NES original, but it's been tightened up for arcade play - no more infinite 1UPs, and there's actually a decent scoring system now. I can think of nothing I'd have done differently. It's extremely sad that most people will never even have the opportunity to experience it.
a3quit4s | 4,398
Roughly $1,300 USD for a cartridge for a system you also need to buy from the same company? I’ll stick to my RetroZone cart lol

I already have original copies of both the Scandinavian and Japanese NES cartrdiges, but the Exa Arcadia remake that this thread is about is a complete overhaul of the game. Like I said, it plays like the original, but fixes a few of its issues and exploits, and even has a speedrun mode as well. If I had the option, I would only ever play this version of the game in the future, rather than either of my NES cartridges The official port that you posted here is just the original game in an emulator. IMO it's a complete travesty that a pretty much perfect remake exists, one of the best remakes I've ever played of a classic game, and what we get instead is a lazy emulator release.

I totally would love the remake/remaster of Gimmick, but that said, I'm super happy with the "special edition" which apart from being a very affordable HD release, also has -- * Achievements * Time Attack Mode * Online Leaderboards * Save and Quick Load * Rewind Function * Gallery mode and a few other gimmicks (y'all see what I did there

The "big thing" in my mind about Gimmick was the fabulous music. I know the NES cart (released in Europe) did not include the sound chip. As far as I can tell, in order to have the full authentic experience on a cart, you need to reproduce the Famicom version with the integrated sound chip, since the NES can not support expansion audio. Well, I suppose you could mod an NES, but I just don't see this happening -- BUT then again, there was the wonderful homebrew release of Lagrange Point -- so who knows
