Naked Warrior | 288
So, I'm doing some random Mercari searching and up pops this listing for an "Old Game": https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m25194130737/ What satisfaction does the person who posted this get, exactly? I mean, I imagine it is a pair of 10 year olds and they're like, "Let's see if we can make a fake listing and get someone to buy it! That will be hilarious!" But they have just straight up failed. If you know a 10-year-old that wants to be a troll, show him/her this and tell him/her to think bigger: 1) Find a picture of a USA CIB (or just cart, to make the "Got it from a relative" story more believable) - I wouldn't even pay the $50 for a PAL (Norwegian?) copy...c'mon now. 2) Name the listing "Little Samson" or "NES games"...the "Old Game" title screams scam. 3) Put $1,000 on it - Someone locking up $50 on their credit card for a couple weeks until you cancel the transaction isn't very impactful, but locking up $1,000 on their credit line - now that is a dick-move worthy of a Grade-A A-hole. 4) List it on a different troll account that DOESN'T have 22 cancellations and a listing up for two copies of "Pants Restaurant" https://www.mercari.com/us/item/m82551972497/ Damn...Wish I would have gotten my Pants Restaurant when they were on sale 2 for $70...

Californication | 1,491
Ya. I was finding some good stuff on Mercari until they bought out that shity competition of theirs. They somehow completly trashed their algorithm and gained a ton of fake postings. Nm that was Offerup and Letgo. Tulpa | 3,677
Reminds me of Craigslist listings years ago that would casually say "Nintendo games for sale. Mario, Kung Fu, Zelda, Stadium Events, and Donkey Kong."
Strange | 1,727
I don’t think 10 year olds know what Little Samson is. Dude is likely our age.

phart010 | 1,779
Is there a way to see that those transactions were actually canceled? I could see this being real. Could be a less savvy person clearing out a collectors belongings.
TDIRunner | 2,871
If you want to know what the troll gets out of it, they enjoy watching the dozen or so people who fall for it stumble over each other trying to nab it first. They screenshot the messages they get trying to backdoor the buyer and have a good laugh at it all. They probably even get a good laugh from the messages accusing them of being a scammer. I genuinely don't think they care about the money as this person obviously knows they won't get paid for this. The person was bored, and they probably believe that the laughs they got out of this were worth the effort put in.

RH | 5,194
The one that topped them all from that guy were the set of 9 Charizards, all seeming to be in mint condition, for $50. I don't know the most notable, collectible item there is out there that's worth loads of money, but between the Black Lotus and Charizard, those things have been hot and potentially discoverable in the wild for over two decades. He's definitely a troll, no question.
Tanooki | 5,087
Stuff like that, given they seem to be a bit more loose than ebay, makes me wonder why much of anyone would bother even touching Mercari anymore. Time and again, a friend I made on racketboy many years ago and still is, complains plenty and not about ebay, but mercari is #1 and facebook marketplace recently taking #2 place on douchy rotten stupid antics list. It seems to follow a pretty predictable pattern of abuses between them. Mercari has backdoors, fake listings, people changing the terms after the sale, not sending, etc. The FB mess tends to be people recently this year using it as a payday loan, find a sucker, peddle some $10 duplicates for like $80 as real, play dumb, and ride out the period keeping the money in the meantime. I do not like ebay, but this stuff is nowhere near as common there considering how they tend to treat sellers, yet do nail buyers who develop a pattern of it too. tidaldreams | 654
Mercari is a complete joke... anything good is snapped up in seconds and if you do happen to snag a good deal the seller can cancel without remorse. If you get something not as described, it's impossible to both return it to get your money back and rate the seller, which makes it a cesspool of scammers. Don't get me started with how bad the interface and the search engine are.

Don't get me started with how bad the interface and the search engine are. I definitely think there are shenanigans going on with Mercari. I have some saved searches that I check on once or twice a day. Often times I’ll check the search for an item at noon and there will be no new results. Then later the same day there will be a sold listing for that item (at a lower than average price) and it says “sold 16 hours ago” or something like that. It happens very frequently and most noticeably on desirable games priced much less than the going rate. I suspect there are some people that are getting first dibs on certain items before they even become visible to everyone else. All that said, I’ve bought and sold a ton on Mercari and have never had any issues with the app. It works better than eBay in my opinion. barrels | 125
My luck on Mercari, both as buyer and seller, comes in waves. The people running it are absolute idiots, don’t care, or both. Their customer service is abysmal and like others have said, it’s an environment ripe for deals falling through. I have zero faith in anything close to real-time search results — it’s purely luck if you see something quick enough to grab it (eg maybe you landed on the right server at the right time?). Even then, back door deals hurt man. Edited July 28, 2021 by barrels
Avgn Gamer | 707
I had a deal fall through on a Nintendo Power 100 n64 controller for 70 bucks and the asshole relisted it for 100. Tanooki | 5,087
Maybe it's dumb luck but I'm curious if I'm dealing with shenanigans on ebay at the moment. Cart I've wanted for awhile resurfaced, usually this thing sells south of 100, so I dropped a bid semi-close to that, and this other mystery guy pops in, it's not some low count account but his bid history is 0 for the window ebay allows public viewing. It's now like twice where I valued it almost, and it still has most the duration to go. Seems fishy. Any way I can poke a stick at it to see if it's a shill? Californication | 1,491
Ebay user Kumsjapan stole photos from another listing and posted the item for sale for 50% of the price.
